Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know Before You Get Tested
General Testing & Eligibility
How can I accurately check my overall fitness level?
The most reliable way to assess your fitness is through clinical testing.
Tests like VO2 Max, Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), and Blood Lactate Profiling provide precise insights into your cardiovascular fitness, metabolism, and endurance performance.
Can I get these tests as part of a package?
The most reliable way to assess your fitness is through clinical testing.
Tests like VO2 Max, Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), and Blood Lactate Profiling provide precise insights into your cardiovascular fitness, metabolism, and endurance performance.
Yes, You can get these test as part of a package.
How often should I re-test?
Every 12–16 weeks or at the start/end of a training block for accurate progress tracking.
What Piece of Equipment Should I Test on?
Choose based on your sport:
- Runners / Hyrox → Treadmill
- Cyclists → Bike
- Triathletes → Both (recommended)
Do I need to be highly fit to do these tests?
Not at all.
- If you are already training, testing helps eliminate wasted effort and improves results faster.
- If you are just starting, testing gives you a clear baseline to build from.
You don’t need to be fit to get tested — you get tested to get fit.
Are these tests safe for youth and teenagers?
Yes, completely safe.
We carefully monitor heart rate and effort levels, and protocols are adjusted based on age and fitness level to ensure safety at all times.
Why should a youth athlete get tested, and at what age?
Young athletes are at risk of overtraining. Testing ensures safe development and optimal progress.
Recommended age: 14–16+ for competitive athletes.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
Why is metabolic testing important
It shows exactly how your body uses energy at rest, allowing you to:
- Build accurate nutrition plans
- Maintain performance
- Manage weight effectively
How does RMR testing help with weight loss?
Online calculators are estimates.
RMR testing gives you:
- Exact daily calorie burn
- A precise target for fat loss
- No need for extreme dieting
Do I need to fast before an RMR test?
Yes.
- 12-hour fast required (water allowed)
- No intense exercise for 24 hours prior
You’ll receive a full preparation guide after booking.
VO2 Max Testing
Why is Vo2 Max testing important for me?
Vo2 Max testing is important because it is considered the gold standard for cardiovascular fitness testing and because it accurately measures your aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels.
Results from Vo2 Max testing (such as our 5-zone training system) enables you to tailor or develop you exercise programme / regimes, measure progress and improvement, and optimise your performance as an athlete.
How is a VO2 Max test performed?
You exercise on a treadmill or bike while wearing a metabolic mask.
The system measures:
- Oxygen intake
- Oxygen utilization
- Cardiovascular efficiency in real-time
How long does it take to improve Vo2 Max?
Improvements to your Vo2 Max level can be seen in as little as a few weeks to a few months or longer, provided you are engaged in exercise activities that increase your Vo2 Max such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
It is important to note that depending upon your sport/discipline increasing your Vo2 Max may not be of primary concern however the insights gained e.g. Aerobic and Anaerobic threshold from your Vo2 max testing will then be used as primary measures of improvement.
Furthermore, progress in Vo2 Max levels also depends on your genetics and overall lifestyle. Consistent and intense aerobic exercises can yield noticeable results.
Will the test affect my training week?
No.
The intense portion is short, and recovery is quick. It will not disrupt your training schedule.
Should I fast before a VO2 Max test?
No full fasting required.
- Avoid heavy meals 3–4 hours before
- Light fueling is recommended
Do you perform the testing only for the group?
The Performance Lab provides Vo2 Max testing for both individuals as well as groups.
Whether you are a novice or professional athlete or if you manage or coach a team of athletes at a school or sports club, enquire with our performance coaching experts today to request a quote for Vo2 Max testing for individuals or groups.
Blood Lactate & Substrate Utilisation
What is lactate threshold testing, and do I need it?
This test measures how lactate builds up in your blood during exercise.
It helps you:
- Train in the correct zones
- Improve endurance
- Maximize performance efficiency
Does the finger-prick hurt?
It’s a very small pinch.
We use a tiny lancet, and most people barely notice it.
Will the test exhaust me?
No.
This is a sub-maximal test, meaning:
- You don’t go to full exhaustion
- Recovery is quick and easy
